Why am I passionate about this?

I love to laugh. Quite often it’s at inappropriate times or at someone else’s expense, but either way, it’s a huge part of who I am. Second only to prayer, I find laughter to be the best remedy for a difficult situation. It’s hard to be sad when you’re laughing, and as a writer who puts characters into very challenging positions, that’s always at the forefront of my mind. While readers may not always relate to the exact circumstance my characters are in, they may very well find common ground in the levity they seek when trying to survive it.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Bachelorette Party

Bethany Crandell Why did I love this book?

This book has all my very favorite things: irreverent humor, wedding drama, crass women in action (think Bridesmaids), and some hot and spicy lovin’ with a very sexy young man. (Relax, he’s legal…but just barely). Considering this author co-wrote two of my favorite movies: 10 Things I Hate About You, and Legally Blonde, it’s no surprise that this book tops my list.

What is this book about?

After being left at the altar by her soap star fiance, Los Angeles high school teacher Zadie Roberts wants nothing more to do with love and romance. With the help of her best buddy Grey and several bottles of wine, she just might survive the trauma of the wedding that wasn't. Unexpectedly, Grey gets engaged to Zadie's prim and proper cousin Helen, and suddenly Zadie is dragged back into wedding festivity hell. The coup de grace is Helen's bachelorette party, thrown by her clique of prissy friends and certain to be a day of torture. But when the Pinot Grigio…

Book cover of Dial A for Aunties

Bethany Crandell Why did I love this book?

Sutanto nails the chaos/fun/frustration of family dynamics in this fast-paced read! The razor-sharp wit of the aunties coupled with the hysterical ‘accidental murder’ plotline had me cackling out loud. There’s also a gem of a love story in here, too, but the Aunties definitely steal the show. So freakin’ funny!

What is this book about?

"Sutanto brilliantly infuses comedy and culture into the unpredictable rom-com/murder mystery mashup as Meddy navigates familial duty, possible arrest and a groomzilla. I laughed out loud and you will too.”—USA Today (four-star review)

“A hilarious, heartfelt romp of a novel about—what else?—accidental murder and the bond of family. This book had me laughing aloud within its first five pages… Utterly clever, deeply funny, and altogether charming, this book is sure to be one of the best of the year!”—Emily Henry, New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read

Book cover of Finlay Donovan Is Killing It

Bethany Crandell Why did I love this book?

A catastrophic misunderstanding inside a Panera leads to one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time! Finlay—the kind of mom who tapes her kid’s hair back into place after she has a fight with the scissors—is a hysterical narrator. Watching her bumble her way through a crime was an absolute delight! **Bonus: There’s some sexy stuff, too! Janet Evanovich readers will devour this series!!

Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny…

Book cover of Go the F*ck to Sleep

Bethany Crandell Why did I love this book?

I was (thankfully) long past the “putting kids to bed” stage of life when I first read this book, but you don’t have to be in the depths of sleep-deprived hell to enjoy it! This book is 100% irreverent which makes it 100% perfect! It will provide just the right amount of levity to any frustrated parent/sitter who can’t understand why that beautiful, crying child in front of them won’t go to sleep already! Disclaimer: If you don’t appreciate a good F-bomb, don’t read this book. The title says it all.

Book cover of Fools Rush in

Bethany Crandell Why did I love this book?

This book was Higgins’ debut and holy moly does it deliver! It’s endearing but not in a sappy way, sweet but not to the point of annoyance, swoony but not in a “I need Lava Soap" way, and most importantly it’s laugh-out-loud funny! Just like her many other books since, her characters are perfectly flawed with makes them beyond relatable and oh-so addictive! A great book to get to know this author!
